Troubleshooting

Intake issues can have a direct effect on the profitability of your gas turbine. Corrosion, erosion, fouling and FOD can result in anything from an increase in heat rate - and decrease in engine power - to a catastrophic failure of the turbine. We can help detect, and rectify issues associated with performance degradation, working with operators to prevent these issues re-occurring.

Fleet Monitoring

Understanding the causes of changes in the intake filtration system performance can be a challenge for day to day operation. Even identical intakes in the same location may exhibit different characteristics in operation.

Following initial inspection, we can work with your team to build up a picture of how the intake performs over time, building up a picture that allows filter replacement and maintenance to be optimised.

Intake Health Checks

If you are scheduling an outage, we can time a site visit to coincide with it, and provide you with a report on the condition of all the accessible parts of the intake system. Early identification of issues can prevent longer term problems - saving money and reducing downtime.

Retrofit, Fabrication and Installation Support

We can provide TA support for site work, if you are building a new facility, or retrofitting an existing one. Our experience will ensure that the installation is effective, and preventing issues that can arise with new facilities due to limited understanding of the CTQ's for intake systems among construction teams.

Inspection

If you need a presence at a fabricator, to supervise or inspect equipment, then we can provide this service, freeing your employees of these additional requirements, and providing effective resolution of any fabrication problems.

Surveys

If you are changing filters, or moving to a new supplier, it is essential that you have an effective benchmark of your current system. This ensures that you will have a true understanding of performance changes resulting from the change, and can measure the real world performance against the promotional material from the supplier.

About

Why choose us?

Operators

The operation of your Air Intake System has direct implications for the overall performance and profitability of your installation. Correct selection and maintenance of your filterhouse will provide significant returns on any investment. An independent health check of your system can identify shortcomings, document the condition of the installed filters and identify improvements to your operation.

GT OEM's

You are already aware of the criticality of the intake system to the performance of the facility. A detailed understanding of its operation, and the issues that can occur often requires specialist knowledge, and a deeper familiarity with intake systems. We can provide the field support for you, reporting back to your home team - saving you the cost, and time of arranging a site visit yourself.

GT Filtration Suppliers

Field support can be costly, and takes key staff away from their day to day job. Whatever and wherever your issue, we can work with your customer support team to identify and rectify field problems. Our knowledge and experience means that we can quickly get to the root cause of site problems, and collaborate on effective solutions and resolution, resulting in minimal impact to your team and their other commitments.

Experience

Charlie Brake

I have over twenty years experience working with Gas Turbine Air Filtration systems. I started out working in research and development for Altair Filter Technology, who at the time were concentrating on the marine and offshore markets. R&D gave me a great foundation in the fundamentals of filtration, and over a period of 5 years, I worked on developing new filters, water removal and filtration systems, many of which are now established products in the global market.

Towards the end of this period, I took on the additional responsibilities of customer support and troubleshooting, gained my OPITO qualifications, and began spending time working on site with customers around the world, helping to identify and resolve issues with their equipment.

With the acquisition of Altair by General Electric (GE)  in 2007, the customer support role began to take up more of my working time, and within a year I was the first employee to be hired to the newly formed Product Service Team. This provided a fantastic opportunity, with access to the GE fleet, gaining experience intake systems from all the major suppliers, and working on Turbines ranging from small aero derivative units all the way through to H-class installations. I also spent a lot of time working in new industries - Mobile, Powergen and LNG, while continuing to support offshore and marine customers.

The air filtration business was sold in 2014 to CLARCOR, and I transferred across with it. During this period I was supporting a number of large scale LNG facilities that were under construction, and I gained insight into the LNG business and its operation, as well as  experience of large scale site construction and commissioning. I worked to establish good relationships with all the key parties, ensuring that site team queries were dealt with quickly and effectively, and that the construction went smoothly, and on time.

From 2017 to 2020 I worked for the Parker Gas Turbine Filtration Division, providing customer support for EMEA and APAC. This included site inspections, surveys and retrofit support, as well as identifying and resolving fleet issues, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), and system recommendations to customers.

After the challenges of the COVID-19 outbreak, I realised that there was an opportunity to provide independent expertise to operators, and assisting OEM's and filter manufacturers with field support, resulting in the formation of CB Consultancy in early 2021.
